Basic Insurance Coverage

Basic insurance coverage is the most minimal and affordable coverage offered by an insurer.

In some countries, getting certain basic insurance coverages, such as basic health insurance or liability car insurance, may be compulsory. You can usually choose to get more extensive coverage (through supplementary insurance policies or riders) in exchange for higher premiums.

Example:

If you take out a household insurance policy in Switzerland, your household is covered by basic insurance against fire, burglary, robbery and simple theft of property from your home. For a marked up premium you can add the “simple theft away from home” rider, which covers valuables you take with you when you leave your home.
