About the financial independence (FIRE) calculator on moneyland.ch:
- The financial independence calculator makes it easy to calculate how long it will take you to save enough capital to become financially independent. You can also quickly calculate how much money you need to save every month in order to reach financial independence within a given time frame.
- FIRE is an acronym for financial independence, retire early. The aim of FIRE strategies is to save as much money as possible as quickly as possible in order to achieve financial independence. To do this, FIRE strategies require minimizing expenses in relation to income through careful budgeting and simple lifestyles.
- Financial independence, as used in this context, means the ability to stop working for income if you choose to without sacrificing your standard of living. To do this, you must save enough capital to cover your costs of living during your period of financial independence – typically for the rest of your life. How long it takes you to reach financial independence depends on many factors. Primary factors include: your expenses; how much capital you already have; how much you are able to save; the returns you are able to make on invested capital; how long you hope to remain financially independent.
- The option to calculate savings needed to reach FIRE lets you quickly find out how much money you have to save every month (in Swiss francs) in order to reach financial independence within your desired time frame. Calculations of the amount of capital which you need to accumulate are based on your anticipated monthly expenses during financial independence multiplied by the number of years for which you want to remain financially independent, minus returns on capital investments.
- The option to calculate the time needed to reach FIRE makes it easy to calculate how many years it would take you to reach financial independence at your current savings rate. The results also show you the percentage of your income which you are able to save.
- Inflation is not accounted for in calculations. Returns on capital investments are only calculated up to the point of financial independence. Calculations assume that annual returns are added to capital at the end of each year rather than at the beginning of each year. Results are rounded to the second decimal.
