The FIFA world cup will be kicking off soon. Between November 20 and December 18, 2022, the world’s football teams will compete in Qatar. For the first time, the football world cup is not happening during the Swiss summer months, but shortly before Christmas instead.
In the initial round, Switzerland will play Cameroon (on Thursday, November 24, at 11:00 AM), Brazil (on Monday, November 28, at 5:00 PM), and Serbia (on Friday, December 2, at 8:00 PM).
Many matches will be broadcast live
In Switzerland, world cup games will be shown on several different TV channels. Matches will be available on free public TV channels, so you do not have to get a pay TV subscription or use pay-per-view services to watch individual games.
These TV channels will broadcast the football world cup in Qatar:
- BBC and ITV will each broadcast 24 of the world cup matches (these channels may cost extra, depending on your TV plan).
- Free Swiss public channels RTS 2 (French) and SRF 2 (German) will broadcast all 64 FIFA World Cup 2022 matches.
- Free German public TV channels ARD and ZDF will broadcast 48 world cup matches between them.
- Austrian public TV channel ORF 2 will show 39 world cup matches.
- France’s TF 1 channel will broadcast some world cup games – primarily matches which include the French team.
Most of these are free TV channels which come with conventional Swiss TV plans. If you do not have a TV plan, you can follow the world cup using the RTS and SRF online services. Unlike many other football matches and tournaments, the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar will be played on public Swiss stations, so you do not have to subscribe to a special sports TV plan or pay per view using pay TV.
What is the best way to watch world cup games?
Some matches will take place at 8:00 PM – a time when many people are off work and can view the games on their home television sets. But other matches will be played at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 5:00 PM.
Depending on your schedule, you will likely have to find alternative ways to watch the matches played during work or school hours.
Many TV plans let you stream broadcasts on multiple devices, enabling you to watch the football world cup on your phone, table, or on a computer. If the nature of your job and that of your boss allow for it, you can access your plan and stream matches while at work.
Another alternative: You can view the programs live using the free accounts offered by Swisscom TV Air, Teleboy, and Zattoo. You can also watch all of the games broadcast by Swiss public television on the RTS and SRF websites and apps.
