When can I make voluntary contributions to my Swiss pillar 2a pension fund? Does doing this make sense financially speaking?
Hi there,
As a self-employed individual, you can contribute a large amount of money to private retirement savings using 3a retirement accounts and life insurance policies on a tax-deductible basis. If the caps on 3a savings don't match your retirement saving goals, you can supplement 3a savings with 3b private retirement funds and life insurance policies (non tax-deductible).
Voluntary occupational pension funds (2b) can be advantageous in some cases, primarily because the allow you to continue contributing to second pillar retirement savings while you are self-employed or unemployed. This can help you avoid gaps in your second pillar contributions - which would result in your receiving a lower pension in your old age.
However, only a handful of voluntary occupation pension plans exist, and most of these are provided by the Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution, which operates on behalf of the Swiss Federal Government.
If you prefer the peace of mind which comes with receiving a lifelong pension at a rate stipulated by the government, then joining a voluntary occupational pension fund may be a good solution for you. On the other hand, if you want more flexibility and control over your retirement assets, a 3a retirement account or life insurance policy or a 3b solution may be a better choice.
