Hi all. My wife and I will be moving to Switzerland shortly and we are looking for the right bank in the canton of Zurich to work with. Ideally, we would like just one account which we can both use for everyday payments and deposits. We need a bank with plenty of ATMs and good online services.

Thanks for your help with this.

Greetings,

Married couples looking to bank in Switzerland can generally choose between the following options:

1. Each partner can open their own account (instead of a joint account) and give their partner a power of attorney over their account.

2. You can open a joint account. The account is held by both spouses. Each spouse has full signing rights over the account. That means either spouse can access money without permission from the other spouse.

3. Collective account: The account is held by both partners, but both partners must give their consent before assets held in the account are withdrawn.

In Switzerland, checking accounts (known as "private accounts") generally come with annual fees. You can compare the costs of Swiss private accounts here. Savings accounts do not normally have annual fees, but interest varies broadly. You can compare interest offered by Swiss savings accounts here.

Many Swiss banks combine private and savings accounts - as well as credit cards - into banking packages. These are usually only worth getting if you actually need all of the services included. You can compare bank package deals here.

If you also trade securities, make sure to compare brokerage accounts separately because those offered by large Swiss banks tend to be expensive. You can compare online brokers here.
