Can anyone tell me whether Swiss occupational pension funds work on a defined contribution or a defined benefits basis?
Both the defined benefit (DB) and the defined contribution (DC) pension models are used in Switzerland, and pension funds are free to decide which model to work with. In some cases, pension funds may decide to switch models. It is worth noting that in recent years, an increasing number of pension funds have shifted from providing defined benefit plans to offering defined contribution plans.
Because your employer chooses which occupational pension fund will be used for your pillar 2a retirement saving plan, you may have little choice in deciding which model will be used. However, it may be worth asking your employer whether both models are offered by their partnered pension fund.
