I am thinking of renting a boat on my next Mediterranean holiday. Does my Swiss household and liability insurance cover damages to the boat or to other boats or people outside of Switzerland?

Swiss personal liability insurance generally does not include coverage for damages to rented boats or damages to third party property inflicted by a rented boat.
The reason for this is that owners of most types of boats are required to maintain liability boat insurance in Switzerland and many other countries. This insurance typically covers liability for damages to third-party property.
Damages which you inflict on the rental boat are not covered unless the boat's owner has comprehensive boat insurance. If they do not, ask them if you can take out a short-term comprehensive insurance policy to cover your rental.
