Hi there,
In Switzerland, liability for damages inflicted by pets (including horses and ponies) is covered by personal liability insurance.
However, coverage for horses varies between policies, so check your policy or ask your insurer to explain what your insurance actually covers. You may be able to extend the liability coverage for horses. If coverage is insufficient, consider switching to a more adequate insurance policy.
It is important to understand that you will normally not be held liable for damages for which the horse is at fault if you fulfill your due dilligence responsibilities. This can be problematic because if the insurance company finds that you performed due dilligence, it will not pay out benefits because you are not technically liable for the damages. For this reason, before taking out a policy, it is important to ask insurers whether they also pay for damages which occur in spite of due dilligence precautions being taken.
