What are the differences between Swiss accident insurance and Swiss health insurance?
Hi there,
Accident insurance covers the cost of treatment for injuries which are caused by unexpected external factors. Health insurance covers the cost of treatment for illnesses and certain injuries which are caused by anticipated, internal factors.
Both a certain amount of accident insurance and health insurance are compulsory in Switzerland.
Accident insurance in Switzerland:
Employees receive accident insurance through their employer which covers the cost of medical care for accidental injuries with no deductible. This insurance also compensates loss of income (up to 80% of your salary) if you are unable to work due to an injury. If you work more than 20%, you also receive non-occupational accident insurance through your employer which covers you in your leisure time. Your employer chooses the insurance provider.
If you become unemployed you continue to be covered by accident insurance for as long as you receive unemployment benefits.
If you are not employed and do not receive unemployment benefits, you must take out accident insurance from a health insurance provider. This accident insurance has a deductible (the deductible which applies to your health insurance policy) and does not pay out loss-of-income benefits.
Health insurance in Switzerland:
Basic health insurance is compulsory for all residents. The coverage provided by compulsory health insurance is dictated by the federal government. However, the premiums charged vary broadly between insurance providers and also depend on your age and the region in which you reside. Every resident is eligible for compulsory health insurance at going premiums regardless of their health or age.
The moneyland.ch compulsory health insurance comparison makes it finding the cheapest compulsory health insurance policy easy. It also lets you compare insurance models (standard and budget models) and get customer satisfaction ratings.
In addition to compulsory health insurance policies, many Swiss insurance providers also offer supplemental health insurance policies which extend the coverage provided by compulsory health insurance. Insurance providers are free to accept or decline applications for supplemental health insurance policies as they choose.
You can compare the costs, benefits and coverage of supplemental insurance policies using the moneyland.ch supplemental health insurance comparison.
