Dear sir/madame,

I came across your website while researching a way to open a Swiss bank on behalf of a Brazilian citizen. This person lives in Brazil but would like to open a bank account in Switzerland. Is this possible? If so, what costs and conditions would be attached?

So far I have been turned away by a number of Swiss banks, and the amount of money in question isn't nearly enough to interest big private banks.

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Greetings,

Swiss banks have become less open to non-residents customers in recent years. Aside from U.S. citizens, which may find it difficult to open a Swiss bank account even if they live in Switzerland, most other residents can open accounts at many Swiss banks.

Customers residing outside of Switzerland can expect to pay an additional fee - typically 300 Swiss francs per year. The non-resident fee may be higher than that at some banks, and lower at others. Some Swiss banks waive non-resident fees for good customers (mortgage or wealth management customers, for example). You can learn more about non-resident fees here.

Many Swiss banks only accept customers who are not resident in Switzerland or neighboring countries if they qualify as high-value customers. Because the exact criteria used for customers from different countries are not published, and vary between banks, the only way to find out whether a person qualifies is by asking banks directly.

Some Swiss bank and bokers provide easier access for foreign residents and also waive non-resident fees for brokerage accounts. However, brokerage accounts are generally the exception. Eligibility requirements for opening a private account or savings account are tighter. You can compare Swiss brokerage accounts here.
