Is Swiss BVG similar to a U.S. 401k?
Hi there,
A Swiss 2a occupational pension fund (BVG) is similar to a co-sponsored employer/employee 401k pension fund.
The main difference is that everyone employed in Switzerland is required to join an occupational pension fund and all employers are required to be pension fund members and co-sponsor their employees' pension savings. A 401k is not obligatory for U.S. employees, and U.S. employers are not required to co-sponsor their employees' 401k retirement savings accounts - although they may.
