My gran spent some time (and tons of money) in a care home last year. I am helping her file her Swiss tax return and am wondering whether there is a tax deduction for care home costs. Can all or part of these be deducted?
Hi there,
The cost of staying in a care home can be deducted from your taxable income. However, a portion of the costs are considered to be basic living expenses and cannot be deducted. This threshold varies between cantons based on cost of living estimates. In Zurich only care home costs above CHF 2000 per month are tax deductible.
