I just opened a pub in Switzerland and I would like to sell gift cards which can be redeemed for meals, cocktails and the like. I am wondering whether I need to pay VAT on gift cards which I sell. If so, do I also pay VAT on meals which people buy using gift cards? Do you have any information about this?

Hi there,

In Switzerland, vouchers and gift cards are classified as cash equivalents. As such, you do not need to pay VAT on the gift vouchers or gift cards you sell.

When gift cards or other vouchers are redeemed for goods or services, you pay VAT on the goods and services provided as you would if the purchase was paid in cash.

Best regards from Moneyguru
