Good day,

What optional riders would you recommend that I add when I get car insurance?

Thanks

Optional riders for car insurance that are generally good to have include:

  • Gross negligence protection: If you have this rider for third-party liability car insurance, your car insurance provider will waive their right to reduce the insurance benefit when you cause an accident due to gross negligence. For example, if you fall asleep at the wheel due to being overtired, that could be deemed gross negligence, and the insurance company would only be required to cover part of the resulting damages. Because liability claims can run into hundreds of thousands or even millions of francs, adding this rider is generally worth it.
  • Roadside assistance insurance: If you do not already have a roadside assistance plan (from TCS, for example), then adding this insurance rider is worth considering. The premium you pay for the roadside assistance rider is relatively low, when you consider that the costs of roadside assistance in Switzerland can be very high.

Optional riders that you only need in specific situations include:

  • Parked car damages insurance: If your car is new or almost new, then adding insurance that covers damages caused by unknown third parties when you car is parked is worth considering.
  • Bonus protection: Car insurance providers that use bonus-malus systems for third-party liability insurance and/or collision insurance (full-casco) generally offer a bonus protection rider. If you have this optional insurance rider, the insurance company will waive their right to raise your insurance premium after you file an insurance claim (when you have an accident, for example). Adding this rider only makes sense if the cost of the insurance premium and the bonus protection rider combined is cheaper than the premium you would pay for car insurance that does not use bonus-malus.
  • Passenger/Accident insurance: This insurance covers medical expenses when you or your passengers are injured in a car accident. It also typically pays out a small death benefit if one of you are killed in a car accident. But this insurance is only beneficial if there are people who drive in the car who are not residents of Switzerland and are therefore not covered by mandatory Swiss accident insurance. It also doe not make sense to get this coverage if the people who use or ride in your car are adequately covered against accidents by a foreign insurance.
  • Underinsured driver insurance: If you drive your car in countries that have low or no mandatory third-party liability car insurance, then adding this rider is worth considering. If you suffer injuries or damages in a car accident caused by a driver that does not have enough insurance to meet your liability claims, your Swiss car insurance will cover the difference, up to certain limits. You can find detailed information in the guide to Swiss underinsured driver insurance.
