The International Motor Insurance Card is a certificate which certifies third-party liability car insurance coverage within the Green Card system region.
Formerly known as the Green Card, this document serves as proof that you are sufficiently covered against liability claims resulting from accidents caused by your insured vehicle when you travel to Green Card system member countries. It also facilitates the filing and settlement of liability car insurance claims across borders.
You can obtain an International Motor Insurance Card from your Swiss car insurance provider.
Carrying an International Motor Insurance Card with you is essential when you drive your car to Green Card system member countries which do not have bilateral insurance agreements with Switzerland.
You do not need to carry an International Motor Insurance Card when you drive to EU or EFTA member countries, Andorra or Serbia. These countries have bilateral insurance agreements with Switzerland.
Note that insurance providers have the right to exclude Green Card system member countries from insurance coverage. Countries which are excluded are crossed off on the International Motor Insurance Card. The card does not serve as proof of insurance in countries which are excluded. If you travel to excluded countries, you will generally be required to purchase temporary third-party liability insurance at the border.
