Price Index

A price index is a stock market index that only accounts for the share prices of stocks. Dividends and other capital distributions are not accounted for. The counterpart of a price index is a performance index.

Most indexes are calculated in both price index and performance index versions, though the price index version is often more well-known. That is the case with the Swiss Market Index (SMI), the Nikkei-225, and the Nasdaq-100, among others. When these indexes are mentioned, it is generally in connection with the price index version, unless otherwise specified.
