Yallo Go XL: New Internet Offer Reviewed

January 31, 2018 - Ralf Beyeler

Yallo Go XL is the new Internet offer from Sunrise brand Yallo. Telecom expert Ralf Beyeler from moneyland.ch analyzed this mobile Internet offer.

Yallo has been offering mobile Internet contracts branded as Yallo Go since November 2016. What is interesting about this home Internet offer is that it technically connects to the Internet through a mobile network. Consumers can use their home Internet connection outside of their home – in their office, holiday home or mobile home, for example. From February 2018, Yallo is offering the new Yallo Go XL service with faster data transfer speeds.

A summary of Yallo Go XL

The Yallo Go XL offer has a standard fee of 49 Swiss francs per month without a long-term contract. A lower fee of 39 francs per month applies to subscriptions with long-term contracts of 12 or 24 months. The Yallo Go XL offer provides unlimited Internet use – there are no limits on data use.

Customers benefit from the fast LTE 4G+ network. That means they can download data at speeds of up to 300 Mbps and upload data at speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Yallo does not throttle bandwidth, which means the connection is not slowed after a certain data limit has been reached.

The Yallo Go XL service uses the Sunrise mobile network. The disadvantage: Because a wireless mobile network is used, customers may experience fluctuations in bandwidth when a large number of users in the same area transfer data at the same time.

New Yallo Home Box

Customers can, upon request, obtain the new Yallo Home Box. This console costs 10 francs when obtained along with a 12-month Yallo Go XL contract, and is provided free of charge to customers with 24-month contracts. The console is used to connect to the mobile network.

Comparison with other offers

Yallo Go, another service from Yallo, has been offered since the second half of 2016. It has a fee of 39 francs per month without a long-term contract, and a fee of 29 francs per month with a 12-month contract. However, the bandwidth is limited to 21 Mbps for downloads and 8 Mbps for uploads.

Home Internet connections which connect through mobile networks are also offered by Sunrise competitors. Salt charges 35 francs per month for its Unlimited Surf offer. Salt provides fast LTE connectivity and does not throttle bandwidth. Swisscom offers similar Internet connections, but data is limited to 10 or 20 gigabytes per month depending on the contract.

Sunrise offers unlimited connectivity with its Mobile Internet Start at a flat rate of 9 francs per month. Bandwidth is limited to 2 Mbps for downloads and 1 Mbps for uploads. The Mobile Internet Comfort offer costs 19 francs per month and has a higher bandwidth of 10 Mbps for downloads and 5 Mbps for uploads. Sunrise Mobile Internet Unlimited provides full LTE connectivity at a flat rate of 49 francs per month.

The verdict of moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler

Yallo Go XL is particularly well suited to customers who need a very fast Internet connection backed by a reliable network. The Sunrise mobile network has received very good ratings in independent tests – like those conducted by Connect. However, the cheaper 19-franc offer from Sunrise is perfectly adequate for many Internet users.

“On the other hand, families with multiple Internet users that spend a lot of time in holiday homes or traveling in mobile homes may find an unlimited offer like the one from Yallo interesting” says Ralf Beyeler of moneyland.ch. Without long-term contracts, both the Yallo offer and the Sunrise offer (Sunrise Mobile Internet Unlimited) cost 49 francs per month.

An important limitation which applies to all Internet connections which run on mobile networks is that data transfer speeds are subject to major fluctuations. Mobile networks only have a limited data transfer capacity. A mobile network can quickly become overloaded when a large number of users transfer data in the same area at the same time. These fluctuations do not normally occur on fixed-line broadband connections.
