Is Sunrise’s New Bundled Offer a Good Deal?

September 10, 2024 - Ralf Beyeler

Sunrise is launching a Flex Premium Bundle that includes a mobile plan, a phone purchase installment plan, and mobile phone insurance. In this review, moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler takes a close look at the new offer.

Starting now, Sunrise is offering a new Flex Premium Bundle. The new bundled offer is available online and at Sunrise stores, as well as at Sunrise retail partners Mobilezone and Interdiscount.

What is the Flex Premium Bundle?

The Flex Premium Bundle combines three different products:

  • Mobile plan: The bundle must include either the Mobile Up M, Mobile Up L, or Mobile Up XL cellular plan. Other Sunrise mobile plans like Swiss Travel Plus and Mobile Up S are not available as part of the bundle.
  • Mobile phone installment plan: You pay off your phone in installments. Alongside the monthly installment plan with which you pay off your phone in 24 installments, the Flex Premium Bundle can also be combined with the Smart Upgrade option. When you add that option, you get a discount of at least 25 percent off the monthly installments. In exchange, you agree to either return the device to Sunrise after 24 months, or pay off its remaining value in either one large payment or 12 monthly installments.
  • Flex Upgrade: The bundle includes the Flex Upgrade option that lets you replace your phone with a different one, and also includes mobile phone insurance.

Sunrise already offers all of these products individually. The main difference is that the Flex Premium Bundle comes with a 50-percent discount on the monthly fee for the mobile plan.

Why is Sunrise offering this bundle?

Sunrise says that the Flex Premium Bundle offers more flexibility.

The telecom service provider stresses that the offer is not just reserved for new customers, but is also available to existing customers. Sunrise customers can migrate from their existing plans to the Flex Premium Bundle right away. If the minimum contract term for your existing plan has not yet expired, Sunrise will waive the penalty fee for terminating it early. If you are already paying off a phone with an installment plan, then you should ask Sunrise about the fees you would pay to terminate your installment plan in your specific case.

It is important to note, though, that the contract for the Flex Premium Bundle comes with a minimum term of 24 months.

Who could benefit from the Flex Premium Bundle?

If being able to trade in your phone for a new one is important to you, and you also need mobile phone insurance, then the Flex Premium Bundle can be worth looking at. But in exchange for the convenience, you pay a higher price than if you were to get the cheapest solution on the market and use the same phone for as long as possible.

On the other hand, if you usually use the same phone for at least two years, then the new offer is not particularly attractive. In this case, it is cheaper to get the most affordable mobile plan and buy your phone separately from a low-cost electronics dealer. That applies whether or not you want to get stand-alone phone insurance.

Customers should bear in mind that Sunrise’s standard prices for mobile plans are relatively high. Even with a 50-percent discount, the mobile plans are still expensive compared to many competing offers. A Sunrise mobile plan with unlimited calls and data within Switzerland costs 30.95 francs per month – with the 50-percent discount. Some other Swiss mobile service providers offer similar plans for less than 20 francs per month.

Is the Flex Premium Bundle actually flexible?

The new offer is flexible in that you can change your device for a different one at any time. But with its 24-month minimum contract term, the bundle does not give you flexibility when it comes to moving to a different service provider. The bundle is also limited in terms of which mobile plans can be used, with only three Sunrise mobile plans available to choose from.

Most Swiss mobile service providers used the term flexible in connection with how easily you can terminate your mobile plan without paying penalty fees.
