New prices apply from October or November
For new customers, the higher prices have already applied since October 17, 2024. Existing customers will only begin paying the higher fees for their subscriptions from November 21, 2024 at the earliest. Note: The information in this report applies to subscriptions purchased directly from Disney Plus.
From 9.90 francs to 20.90 francs in less than five years
This is the fourth time that Disney Plus has raised its prices since it launched in Switzerland less than five years ago. When it was launched, Disney Plus offered just one subscription. The price tag was 9.90 francs per month. Disney Plus later raised the price of the plan by three francs, to 12.90 francs. Around a year ago, Disney Plus introduced additional subscriptions. The existing Disney Plus offer became the Premium subscription, with a price tag of 17.90 francs per month – a five-franc price hike.
In short, the cost of a monthly subscription from Disney Plus has climbed from 9.90 francs per month at the launch, to 20.90 francs today. That is a price increase of 11 francs per month or 111 percent in less than five years. By comparison, the overall inflation in Switzerland over the same period was just 6.2 percent.
Price hikes are common for streaming services
Other streaming service providers have also raised their prices. Market leader Netflix most recently hiked its prices for Swiss customers in April 2024. Sky Show introduced a new subscription model in May 2024, which resulted in higher prices.
Comparison with other video streaming services
A comparison with other streaming service providers makes it clear that market leader Netflix is still substantially more expensive than its competitors. In spite of the new price hikes for Disney Plus subscriptions, both Sky Show and Netflix still charge more than Disney Plus for Full HD and 4K subscriptions.
When comparing streaming services, it is important to understand that there are big differences between plans with regards to the movies and series included in subscriptions.
