Disney+ Now in Switzerland

January 22, 2020 - Ralf Beyeler

Disney+ launched in Switzerland on March 24, 2020. Ralf Beyeler, telecom expert at independent online comparison service moneyland.ch, analyses the Swiss version of the streaming service from the Walt Disney Company in this review.

Disney+ is the next streaming service to challenge the dominance of Netflix in the Swiss video streaming market. Ralf Beyeler, telecom expert at moneyland.ch, reviews Disney+ here.

What does Disney+ cost?

In Switzerland, access to Disney+ costs 9.90 Swiss francs per month. New customers can test the service free of charge for seven days. Disney+ is also available as an annual subscription for 99 francs per year (8.25 francs per month).

What does Disney+ offer?

Disney has a major advantage in that it has a huge archive of its own proprietary content. This archive includes feature films and series from Disney and its subsidiaries Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. It also includes National Geographic documentaries.

Like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ offers added value through originals – series and feature films made exclusively for the video streaming service. Disney+ originals include The Mandalorian, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, The Lady and the Tramp, and Encore.

Not surprisingly, Disney+ also include classic Disney films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Alice in Wonderland and The Jungle Book, to name a few. Popular film strips like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse – including strips dating as far back as the 1930s – are also available for viewing on Disney+.

Many multi-episode movies like Star Wars and Herbie the Love Bug, and comic hero films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (like Iron Man, Avengers, Captain America and Spiderman) are available over Disney+. The list also includes popular comedies like Home Alone and Sister Act, and all episodes of The Simpsons. But the focus of Disney+ is new Disney classics created for younger audiences.

Which devices can access Disney+?

Disney+ subscribers can stream all content including movies, series and documentaries right on their smartphones or tablets (iOS, Android). You can also stream Disney+ with media players like those installed on Apple TV consoles and smart TV sets. Disney+ subscribers can set up as many as seven individual profiles and stream independently on up to four devices simultaneously.

How does Disney+ compare to other streaming services?

The most important factor in video streaming is the amount and quality of available content. An exact comparison of quality is not possible because it is subject to personal preference. In terms of quantity, the difference between Disney+ and Netflix is negligible.

But Disney+ is more affordable than Netflix. Netflix offers three different subscriptions, each with a different video resolution. The subscription with the lowest-quality picture costs 11.90 francs per month. The highest-resolution Netflix subscription costs 21.90 francs per month. With a price tag of 9.90 francs per month, Disney+ costs less than Netflix and delivers high-resolution video to all subscribers.

There are other video streaming services like Amazon Prime Video or NetzkinoPlus which are more affordable than Disney+.

Verdict by telecom expert Ralf Beyeler

“Disney+ costs just under 10 francs per month. That price tag is competitive,” states Ralf Beyeler, telecom expert at independent comparison service moneyland.ch.

“With that attractive price tag and its huge trove of popular films, Disney is launching a full-scale attack on current market leader Netflix.” Netflix has the advantage of having gotten a big head start in the Swiss video streaming market. “The deciding factor will be whether or not Disney+ manages to meet and exceed the expectations of Swiss consumers over the long term.”
