Disney+ Launches Disney Star and Raises Its Price by 30%

February 17, 2021 - Ralf Beyeler

The Disney+ streaming service is expanding its product while raising its price tag for Swiss consumers. The price increase is 3 francs more per month or 30 francs more for annual subscriptions.

The Disney+ streaming service launched in Switzerland on March 24, 2020. Less than a year later, the price of Disney+ is going up in a big way. From February 23, 2021, monthly Disney+ subscriptions will cost 12.90 francs instead of the former 9.90 francs. The price of an annual subscription is increasing from 99 francs to 129 francs per year.

Existing customers will continue to pay the original price until August 22, 2021.

Disney Star: More content for subscribers

The amount of content available is also increasing along with the price tag. Up until now, Disney+ primarily offered movies and series from Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic. Many consumers in Switzerland only subscribed to Disney+ in order to watch Star Wars hits like The Mandalorian. With the launch of Disney Star, more than 50 series and 280 movies are being added, according to press releases.

Price comparison with Netflix and Amazon

Up until now, Disney+ was somewhat cheaper than Netflix. That is no longer the case. A Neflix subscription costs between 11.90 and 21.90 francs per month. Netflix offers three different subscriptions which primarily differ in terms of image resolution and the number of users which can stream simultaneously. For viewers who are content with low image resolution, the most affordable Netflix subscription is now a cheaper option than Disney+.

Amazon Prime Video is the most affordable of the three most popular video streaming service available to Swiss consumers, with a price tag of 9.99 francs per month. Both Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video only stream video in the best available resolution.

Conclusion by Ralf Beyeler

“The price of Disney+ is anything but stable. Less than a year after its launch, Netflix competitor Disney+ is already raising its prices. That is not exactly customer friendly,” critiques telecom expert Ralf Beyeler from unbiased online comparison service moneyland.ch.
