Sunrise, Lebara, and Yallo Plans to Cost More Because of Inflation

May 2, 2023 - Ralf Beyeler

Sunrise, Switzerland’s second-biggest telecom company, will charge more for all of its mobile and home Internet plans from July 1, 2023. Sunrise justifies the price increases by citing the current high inflation. Here, moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler assesses the changes.

On July 1, 2023, Sunrise will raise its standard fees for mobile plans and home Internet plans by an average of 4 percent. The company cites inflation as justification for the price increases. However, Sunrise has promised that after this change, it will not make any more inflation-linked changes to pricing again until 2025.

Both Sunrise and its subsidiaries Yallo and Lebara make heavy use of special promotional offers in their marketing in order to attract new customers. Often, the promotional discounts apply throughout the life of the plan. These customers too are affected by the price hike, but will continue to enjoy their existing discounts.

Price increases for Sunrise offers

The monthly fees of Sunrise plans will go up by 4 percent, rounded to the nearest ten centimes. Based on that figure, these price increases will apply:

Only some products are affected

The price increase affects the monthly fees of mobile plans and home Internet plans. Sunrise is not raising the prices for other telecom plans, nor for prepaid mobile offers. The per-minute rates and the prices of bundles and options will also remain unchanged.

Assessment by telecom expert Ralf Beyeler

It was only a question of time before a Swiss telecom service provider would use inflation as justification to raise its prices. But the implementation for offers from the primary brand Sunrise is surprising. Customers with standard plans will have to pay 4 percent more. As the calculations show, the price increase for these customers is substantial. Sunrise representatives will likely have a difficult time selling a plan with a price tag of 61.40 francs per month. That price sounds high in a segment where consumers have gotten used to prices in the range of 58, 59, or 59.95 francs.

Customers of budget subsidiaries Yallo and Lebara are less strongly affected from the price hike. The higher the monthly fee of a plan is, the smaller the increase is as a percentage of the price. Just one Yallo plan will see a 4-percent price increase, with lower price hikes across all other Yallo plans. Marketing plans for 39, 39.95 or 50 francs will also likely be easier, as consumers are used to those kinds of price tags.

What can customers who are affected by price increases do? The easiest option is to migrate. Many people have used the same telecom plan for many years, and pay much more than necessary. These consumers could save a lot of money by changing to a different plan. When looking at offers, make sure not to get plans with minimum contract terms. That way you can change to a different service provider if your expectations are not met, or if cheaper offers become available.

In principle, a price increase always presents an optimal opportunity to compare prices and, if price differences are large, to migrate to a cheaper solution. It is perfectly possible to end up paying 70 percent less than before, instead of 4 percent more.
