On September 21, 2020, Sunrise is introducing new mobile plans and new home Internet, TV and telephone plans. The new plans are replacing the previous Sunrise plans. The Sunrise Freedom and Home plans are being phased out.
We Mobile: New mobile plans from Sunrise
Sunrise has branded its new mobile plans as We Mobile.
There are three versions of the new We Mobile plans: M for 65 francs per month; L for 80 francs per month; and XL for 100 francs per month.
The flat fees of all We Mobile plans cover unlimited data and calls within Switzerland. The L and XL versions also include roaming calls within most of Europe and 40 gigabytes of data roaming within Europe.
The XL plan’s flat fee also covers international calls from Switzerland to most of Europe. The XL plan delivers the highest Internet connection speeds.
All We Mobile plans support the new 5G mobile network standard.
The We Mobile plans are also offered in Young versions for young people up to the age of 30. The We Mobile Young plans cost 10 francs less per month than the same plans for older adults.
An interesting feature of We Mobile plans is that if you get two or more plans billed to the same person, you only pay 40 francs per month for each additional plan.
We Home: New home telecom plans
Sunrise is introducing new home telecom plans. As before, the plans include an Internet plan by default, with optional TV and home phone plans.
The new home plans are: We Home S (Internet speed of up to 100 Mbps for 55 francs per month); We Home M (Internet speed up to 500 Mbps for 75 francs per month); and We Home L (up to 10Gbps for 95 francs per month).
Additionally, Sunrise is offering the We Home XL bundled home package which includes fast Internet, TV and phoning. The package costs 100 francs per month.
Multiple-plan discounts
If you subscribe to both the We Home plan and one or more We Mobile plans, you get a discount of 15 francs on the home plan and 25 francs on mobile plans.
We Mobile plans compared to competing offers
For mobile users who only need unlimited calls and data within Switzerland, the We Mobile M plan with its 65-franc-per-month price tag is a relatively expensive. Sunrise’ competitors offer flat-fee plans for less than 30 francs per month. Even lower flat fees for unlimited local calls and data are regularly offered as special promotions.
The roaming allowances included in the We Mobile L plan are almost identical to those of competing offers. Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt currently all offer plans with unlimited local calls and data, and 40 gigabytes of roaming data. The pricing is nearly identical at around 80 francs per month (the Salt plan costs 79.95 francs). Plans may be offered cheaper as part of special promotions.
We Mobile family discounts compared
With the We Mobile plans, Sunrise is focusing heavily on family discounts. Swisscom offers a family discount, but it only applies to customers who also subscribe to a Swisscom home Internet plan.
A family of five which needs unlimited calls and data within Switzerland would pay 225 francs per month with Sunrise. Digitec’s Friends & Family plans work out cheaper at 125 francs per month.
Sunrise is often also expensive when compared to offers which do not have family discounts. The cheapest flat-fee option for unlimited local calls and data without family discounts would cost the family of five 149.50 francs per month.
But the family discounts from Sunrise can be a favorable option for families which frequently travel abroad throughout the year and use a lot of roaming data.
Even when the multiple-plan discounts are accounted for, for most user profiles the cost is still slightly higher than getting the most affordable mobile plan and home Internet plan separately
Verdict by Ralf Beyeler
Sunrise is focusing on family plans. But while offering family plans is a good idea, in many cases the new plans offered by Sunrise are more expensive than affordable plans without family discounts – at least at standard prices.
What is interesting is that the prices of the new Sunrise We Mobile plans are almost identical to those of comparable products from Swisscom.
But plans are different in other regards: The Sunrise plans deliver faster Internet speeds than Swisscom’s plans. But it is only a matter of time before Swisscom upgrades its Internet speeds.
As always, the rule is: If you want to pay the lowest price for the telecom services you need, make sure to compare individual offers and calculate the combined costs. The unbiased telecom comparisons on moneyland.ch help you find the cheapest solution. In many cases, getting separate mobile and home plans works out cheaper than getting bundled packages.
