Salt Mobile Plans Will Cost More

January 21, 2025 - Ralf Beyeler

Private customers will have to pay up to 8.1 percent more for their mobile plans from March 2025. Customers with special promotional prices will be hit particularly hard. Read the analysis by telecom expert Ralf Beyeler.

From Marc 1, 2025, Salt mobile plans will cost more.

An overview of price increases

The basic monthly fee will go up by one franc for plans that cost less than 80 francs per month, and by two francs for plans that cost more than 80 francs per month.

The new rates apply to both existing plans and to new customers. But there is an exception: According to Salt, the price hike will not apply to customers who get a new mobile plan between now and the end of February 2025.

The prices of Surf plans, devices, prepaid mobile offers, mobile options, and optical fiber home Internet plans will remain unchanged. The price hikes only apply to plans sold under the Salt brand, but not to other mobile providers like Gomo, Lidl Connect, and Post Mobile that use the Salt network.

Price hikes also apply to special promotions

Salt frequently uses special promotions to attract new customers. But customers who got their mobile plans as part of special promotions are also affected by the price hikes. Although the discount in Swiss francs will remain unchanged, the amount you have to pay will increase because Salt is raising the basic monthly fee that the discount is applied to.

Salt cites higher running expenses as the reason for the price hike

Salt cites higher running costs as the reason for the price increase. The company says that the cost of electricity (+19 percent), insurance, and rents, in particular, have risen drastically. The two-percent price increase for Salt plans is substantially higher than the official inflation rate, which has only gone up by half-a-percent since Salt’s last price increases in September 2023.

Customers can terminate their plans without penalty fees

As Salt confirmed to moneyland.ch upon request, its customers have the right to terminate their contracts within 30 days without paying penalty fees. Salt asks customers who want to exercise this right to contact its customer service by phone or at a Salt store.

Salt says that it will support customers in finding a suitable solution that matches their needs and will give them outstanding value for money after the price hike. It is pretty clear that Salt will try to keep its customers from migrating.

When Salt last raised its prices, some customers were not able to terminate their plans early. Instead, salt kept the plans in place, but did not raise the fees for those customers until their contracts had expired. The terms and conditions of Salt’s contracts allow for that option.

Price hikes at Sunrise and Swisscom

Salt is not the only telecom provider to raise its prices. Switzerland’s second-largest telecom company, Sunrise, hiked the prices of many of its mobile plans and home Internet plans at the start of 2025. In 2024, numerous Swisscom customers were affected when it began charging for its previously-free Bluewin email service. Swisscom also moved customers who used certain cheap older plans to more expensive plans.

Assessment by telecom expert Ralf Beyeler

Customers affected by a price increase should look at it as an opportunity. If you have used the same mobile service provider for many years, there is a good chance that you could save substantial amounts of money by migrating to a different service provider.

One of the reasons that telecom companies are able to hike their prices is that too few customers give them a red card by terminating their mobile plans.

The official inflation rate has only grown by half-a-percent since Salt last raised its prices, but Salt says itself that it is hiking its prices by two percent, on average.
